Ruth Elaine Young, age 78, of Uhrichsville, died peacefully, Tuesday, September 10, 2024, in her residence, following a period of declining health.
Born in Union Hospital at Dover on August 5, 1946, Ruth was the daughter of the late Charles and Agnes (Metzger) Selzer. At a young age, Ruth assisted her parents in their family store in New Cumberland.
Following her graduation from Tusky Valley High School in 1964, Ruth furthered her education at Kent State University where she obtained her bachelor degree in education She began her teaching career at Tusky Valley and transitioned to Claymont City Schools, where she remained until her retirement in 2012.
Ruth had many interests throughout her lifetime and was a dedicated member of St. James Lutheran Church in Tuscarawas. It was at the church where Ruth could often be found serving the Lord and spending time with her church family. Her volunteer efforts did not go unnoticed as she spent many hours involved in the YMCA Gymnastics Program, served as an advisor to the Claymont Wrestling Mat Maids, and also gave of her time for many years at the Twin City Christan Service Center Food Pantry.
She enjoyed golfing, spending time at the beach, and baking wedding cakes. Recently, she took up quilting, a hobby that follows her back to her mother.
Ruth’s kind, giving, nature will be missed by her nieces and nephews, Stephen (Barb) VonKaenel of New Philadelphia, Vallerie (the late Dan) Wallick of North Carolina, Lisa (Jeff) Walters of Dover, Michael (Brenda) VonKaenel of Colorado, and Dawn Aleksich Ramey of Virginia, and numerous great-nieces and nephews and extended family members.
In addition to her parents, Ruth was preceded in death by her daughter, Suzie; her sisters, Jean VonKaenel and Kathy Aleksich; a nephew, Milan Aleksich; a great-niece, Meghan Wallick, and her former spouses, Butch S. Boone and Chuck Young.
The family will greet guests on Monday, September 16, from 1:00 – 2:00 PM in the St. James Lutheran Church at Tuscarawas where Rev. A. Wallace Anderson will lead a celebration of Ruth’s life at 2:00 PM. A meal and fellowship will follow the service. Private burial will take place in the New Cumberland Cemetery.
The family requests memorial contributions in Ruth’s name be directed to St. James Lutheran Church, PO Box 336, Tuscarawas, Ohio 44682.
