Stephen William Richter of Barton passed away Friday evening, October 4th, at age 82. He was born July 14th, 1942 in Vassar Hospital, Poughkeepsie to Emmanuel Richter and Ruth Hahn Richter.
As a young man, Steve attended Brown University, taking a leave after his junior year to hitchhike through Europe and the Middle East for a year and a half. He graduated Phi Beta Kappa, before getting a Masters from NYU and an MSW from Hunter College. He had a long career as a mental health therapist, working from 1967 until a month before his death.
He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Cheryl Richter, his three children, Gabe Richter, Luke Richter, and Veronica Johnson, his four grandchildren and his four dogs. Steve loved his work; he loved the woods; he loved his dogs; and most of all, he loved his family. He could not pass up a garage sale, and he loved to connect with everyone he met. If you were willing to be his friend, he wanted to be yours.
Caring assistance is being provided by the Sutfin Funeral Chapel, 273 S. Main St., Nichols. Abiding with his wishes, there will not be a funeral, and family and friends will gather for a Celebration of Life at a later date. If you knew him and would like to make a gesture, remember his favorite toast: "So a health to the man on the trail this night; may his grub hold out; may his dogs keep their legs; may his matches never miss fire. God prosper him; good luck go with him; and - Confusion to the Mounted Police".
Memories and condolences may be shared by visiting his guestbook at www.sutfinfuneralchapel.com
