Phillip Donald Ormsby, known affectionately as Phil, passed away peacefully on June 20, 2025, a few weeks shy of his 89th birthday. Born on August 6, 1936, in Hornell, NY, Phillip's life was a testament to the virtues of ambition, determination, thoughtfulness, and courage.
Phillip was an engineer by profession, having dedicated his career to the glass manufacturing industry at Corning, Inc. His colleagues often marveled at his ambitious and hardworking nature, qualities that earned him respect and admiration. Phillip was also known for his witty sense of humor that lightened the atmosphere. He was a perfectionist, always striving to complete every task successfully, a testament to his thoughtful and determined nature.
His professional journey took him to Wellsboro, PA, and Nagykanizsa, Hungary, where he explored 16 beautiful countries while living in Europe. He traveled through many states in the U.S., spending many weeks in Wichita, KS visiting his wonderful grandchildren. Phillip also loved caring for his home while completing several woodworking projects. Completing a rebuild of a 65 Ford Mustang showed his mechanical ability and ambition. His personal projects were not just a hobby, but a passion that showcased his creativity, attention to detail, and relentless pursuit of excellence.
Phillip was a dedicated family man who deeply loved his wife, Rondi Ormsby; children, Joni Delorenzo and Michael Ormsby (Rhonda), cherished grandchildren, Michele Leigh Delorenzo, James Christopher Delorenzo, Tara Harshbarger (Devin), Michael Ormsby, Katie Pettyes (Adam), Kari Haug (Anthony), Jacob Ormsby, and Addison Ormsby. He instilled in them the virtues of hard work, ambition, and thoughtfulness that were the hallmark of his life. Phillip was preceded in death by his parents, Donald and Mary Ormsby, and his sister, Judy Ormsby.
Reflecting on Phillip's life, we are reminded of a quote by Mark Twain, "The secret of getting ahead is getting started." Phillip Ormsby exemplified this in every sphere of his life. He was a man who lived life to the fullest, savoring every moment, and leaving behind a legacy of love, hard work, and ambition. His life was a journey, filled with courage, wit, and thoughtfulness that will continue to inspire his loved ones and all who knew him.
A Graveside Service will be held on Monday, September 15, 2025, at 1:00 pm in Hope Annex Cemetery in Corning, NY. www.haugheyfuneralhome.com
