Valeria C. Thomas Obituary

Valeria C. “Tutz” Thomas, age 103, gracefully left this world on September 26, 2024, at Redbud Village, Plainville, Kansas, leaving behind a legacy marked by strength, kindness, and unwavering dedication to her family and community. She was born on July 29, 1921, in Graham County, Kansas to Charles and Ola (Scruggs) Griffe. On December 11, 1950, she married Robert O. Thomas in Broomfield, Colorado. He preceded her in death in 1989.

A proud graduate of Hill City High School, Valeria life was a tapestry of rich experiences. Shortly after school, she made the brave decision to move to Denver. This was during the World War II era where she took a position at Remington Steel, working tirelessly to produce ammunition. Her journey continued as she relocated to Hanford, Washington, where she contributed to the factory involved in the making of the Atomic Bomb. After her marriage to Robert they moved to Plainville, where she devoted thirty years of her life to the Plainville Rural Hospital, caring for many in her community with her nurturing spirit.

Valeria was not just a devoted caregiver; she was also a vibrant participant in various local organizations. Her spirit shone brightly as she led a Girl Scout troop, became an active member of the Nicodemus American Legion Auxiliary, and contributed to 4-H and the VFW Auxiliary. These roles allowed her to leave a lasting impact on the lives of countless individuals who were fortunate enough to know her.

Beyond her professional accomplishments, Valeria was cherished for her baking; her cookies were beloved by many, including the esteemed Bob Dole during his visit to Nicodemus. Her remarkable cooking was a symbol of her generous heart and the joyful memories she created around the dining table.

Valeria's proudest achievements included rising above the challenges of the Great Depression and actively promoting her community. She selflessly donated her home in Nicodemus to the historical society, ensuring that it would serve as a meaningful part of the museum and office. Furthermore, she was honored by the Nicodemus Historical Society as a centenarian, a testament to her vibrant life and contributions.

She is survived by her loving daughters, Ola B. Pruitt (Rev. James) of Aurora, Colorado and Kim Thomas of Stockton, Kansas. Her legacy continues through her grandchildren, Shawn Harris of Austin, Texas, and Atiba "Kyle" Allah (Soledad) of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, along with her great-grandchildren, LaShaye, El Asim, Faheem, Mecca, Suleimon, Soledad, Elogio, Amado, Eliana, Lexi, Ihssan, and her great-great-grandchildren, Leilah, and Kai.

Valeria was preceded in death by her stepfather, Henry Wilson who raised her from the age of 4; a brother, Maurice Griffie, and her nephew, Paul Richard Reece, whom she lovingly raised. As we celebrate the full and beautiful life of Tutz, we remember a woman whose strength, compassion, and dedication have forever touched our hearts and enriched our community.

Funeral services will be 11:00 AM on October 7, 2024, at the First Christian Church 301 S. Broadway Street in Plainville. Burial will follow in the Plainville Cemetery.

Visitation will be Sunday, October 6th 3:00 PM - 6:00 PM at Keithley Funeral Homes and Crematory-Brock's Chapel 2509 Vine Hays, KS. Monday visitation will be 9:00 AM until service time at the church.

Memorial contributions are suggested to the Rooks County Health Center or the Plainville Kids Wrestling program.
