William McElvaney Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Dillinger Funeral Home - Newport on Oct. 30, 2025.
William "Bill" McElvaney Jr., 83, of Newport, passed from this life on October 29, 2025. He was born in Oxford, Mississippi, to William McElvaney Sr. and Doris (Crowder) McElvaney.

Mr. Bill was a faithful member of Central Missionary Baptist Church, where he proudly served as a devoted deacon. His dedication to his faith and his church family was evident in all he did, and he served with humility, compassion, and a steadfast love for the Lord.
Bill lived a life defined by hard work, kindness, and quiet strength. For many years, he served as the store manager at Van Atkins in Newport, where his professionalism, warm personality, and attention to detail earned him the respect and friendship of both customers and coworkers alike. He took pride in his work and enjoyed the relationships he built throughout his career.

Outside of work, Bill found joy in the simple pleasures of life. He was an avid golfer who loved spending time on the course, enjoying both the game and the company of friends. He also loved to fish, often finding peace and reflection in the quiet moments spent near the water.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his sister-in-law, Cathy Grubbs.

Bill is survived by his devoted wife of fifty years, Phyllis, of the home; his brother, Steve McElvaney of Florida; his brothers-in-law, Terry Jones (Arlene), Mike Jones (Sandra), Rick Jones (Brenda), David Jones (Claudette), and Jimmy Grubbs; his sister-in-law, Susan Crabb (Stan); his lifelong high school friend, David Knight (Freda) of Oxford, Mississippi; and a host of special friends who will cherish his memory.

Bill will be remembered for his integrity, his gentle humor, and the love he shared with those fortunate enough to know him.

Service will be at 10:00 a.m. on Monday, November 3, 2025, at Central Baptist Church led by Brother Keith Hays and Brother Vance Penn.
