The Lewis Family announces the passing of Wycliffe Cortwright Joseph Lewis, also known as Joseph "Joe" Lewis, originally of Potters Village, Antigua, a transplant to New York, USA in 1980, and last residing in Douglas County, GA until his death on Wednesday, October 30, 2024. He died peacefully at home at the age of 79 years old surrounded by his family.
Joe was born on May 21, 1945, to Margaret Accom (Ms. Dovie), and Herman Lewis of Potters Village, Antigua. He was well known across the Island as a mechanic, community leader, beloved teacher, talented musician, and devout Catholic. As a self-taught instrumentalist, he adored the pipe organ and practiced daily until just a few years before his death when his sight completely failed him. As a proficient, he served as organist and choir director for many years at St. Joseph's Cathedral in the Island's capital and St. Anthony's Catholic Church in his local Potters Village. When he moved to the United States, he continued sharing his musical gift, serving at various churches in New York, including Queen of All Saints, Our Lady of Good Counsel, Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, and St. Charles Borromeo, all in Brooklyn NY, and St. Anthony of Padua in Manhattan, NY. When he and Vernie relocated to Georgia to be near their children and grandchildren, he volunteered his services for a short time at Our Lady of Perpetual Help in Carroll County, GA.
As a beloved Math, History, Geography, and Music teacher at Potter's Primary School, Pigott's Primary School, and St. Joseph's Academy, he touched the lives of many Antiguan Youth who to this day hold him in high esteem, were quick to connect with him on Facebook, and accepted his counsel in some regard through the world of Facebook.
Joe is survived by his beloved wife and best friend, Vernie A. Mannix Lewis, and their children, Bridget Lewis (USA), Marion Lewis (France), Angella Lewis-John (USA), Adela Lewis (USA), Johann Lewis (USA), Charlene Elias (USA), and Jennifer Stancill (USA).
He has been blessed with many grandchildren: Yoshika Lowe, Jawaan Christian, Jonothan Lewis, Stefan John, Jazmyne Stancill, Nicholas Elias, William Lewis-John, Zakary Elias, Henry Lewis-John, Ariel Stancill, Matthew Stancill, Katherine Lewis-John, Noah Stancill,Evan Elias, Lucas Elias, Rashad Stancill, and Tatiyana Stancill.
He was fortunate to know his great-grandchild, Toni Grace Lowe.
He is also survived by several siblings: Genevieve. Marion, Louise, Heather, Bernadette, and William, and many nieces, nephews, and cousins all of whom he held in high esteem.
The family will receive friends on Monday, November 11, 2024, from 11:00 AM to 2:00 PM at Hightower's Memorial Chapel. The service will be conducted at Our Lady of Perpetual Help in Carrollton, GA, on Wednesday, November 13, 2024, at 10:00 AM. Inurnment will directly follow at Our Lady of Perpetual Help's Cemetery.
