Sandra Sessoms Obituary

Sandra Sessoms
July 13, 1942 - September 12, 2023
Apex, North Carolina - SANDRA (Sandy) LEE SESSOMS, MD was born In Wake County, Apex, NC on July 13, 1942 and passed away peacefully on September 12, 2023 at her home in Apex. Her intellect, medical expertise, love of life, and capacity for deep and enduring friendships are hallmarks of her remarkable character and life. In addition to a busy medical practice, she volunteered most Saturdays at the San José clinic, a Catholic Charity that provided low to no cost medical care to the uninsured in the greater Houston area.
Her awards are too numerous to mention, but among those she was the most proud are those she received from the Lupus and the Arthritis Foundations for her tireless efforts on behalf of patients with systemic lupus erythematosus, rheumatoid arthritis, and other collagen vascular and autoimmune diseases. She also received many teaching awards from Baylor College of Medicine for the study of rheumatological diseases.
In her spare time, Sandy loved to travel, sometimes on missions to provide medical care for indigent patients in rural Central America, and often to visit the Middle East or the savannas of Africa. Her life has touched so many. Her enthusiasm, her sense of joy in life will be missed by all who knew her.
Sandy is survived by her brother, Andrew Sessoms (Linda); and sister, Katie Sessoms; nephew; niece; grand-niece; grand-nephews; and her poodle, Riley.
Sandy was preceded in death by her Father, William (Bill) Sessoms; and her Mother, Katherine Holland Sessoms.
Thanks to Sherry Alford, Gayle Stephenson, Rita Sears, Doris Gilbert, and Savannah Stephenson for the friendship, love, care and compassion shown to Sandy; to Transitions of Wake County and to The Key personnel.
In lieu of flowers the family requests donations in support of The Sheena G. Stubbers, MD Scholarship and Award Fund, c/o Houston Methodist Hospital Foundation, P.O. Box 4384 Houston, Texas 77210-4384. These funds, when given to students, will be credited to Sandra L. Sessoms, MD.
Graveside service will be held on Saturday, September 23rd, 2023 at 3:00 PM at the Apex City Cemetery, 207 W Moore St., Apex, NC.

Sandra spent hours with me diagnosing a disease that nobody else could figure out. She created a treatment program that brought back my vision and I have been in remission for almost 20 years. She was my miracle! God bless

I was a patient of Dr. Sessums she diagnosed with lupus. She saved my life literally! She would tell you like it was and then tell you what we needed to do to change it. She´s greatly missed. She turned me onto that doctor I have now who did her fellowship with her And I couldn´t be more pleased.

I was a patient of Dr Sessoms for over 25 years. Dr Sessoms was completely dedicated to her patients and always showed great empathy to me. She was always willing to seek answers outside the box when normal treatments were ineffective. I really missed her counsel when she retired. I certainly was deeply saddened when i accidentally came across her obituary. My deepest sympathies to her family.

One of my favorite doctors ever! She treated my whole life not just my knees. I have always spoken highly of her and will remember her fondly and gratefully. She certainly was unique!

I was always so grateful and thankful for Dr. Sessoms, because she finally diagnosed me after my stroke. She would refer to me as "one of her success stories." She was always such an inspiration during my years of recuperation, as well as undergrad and graduate school. She adamantly wanted me to obtain doctorate as well. I will never forget her intelligence, inspiration and belief in me!!!! B BLESSED Dr. Sessoms

I was fortunate to "find" Dr Sessoms at the onset of medical issues. She showed personal interest which made me feel secure in her care. Everyone who knew her praised her for all her knowledge and kindness. The world has lost a fabulous doctor and individual.
