Robert P. Herbst, 86, of Oglesby, passed away unexpectedly on January 16, 2025 at OSF St. Elizabeth Medical Center in Peru.
Funeral services will be 11:00 AM Friday, January 24, at the Hurst Funeral Home in Tonica with Rev. Mark Nowakowski officiating. Visitation will be Thursday, January 23, from 4 to 7:00 PM at the funeral home and Friday from 10:00 AM until time of services. Services will be live streamed via the Hurst Funeral Home Facebook page.
Bob was born in Park Falls, WI on June 15, 1938 to Paul and Alice (Marten) Herbst. He served with the United States Army and Air Force Reserves. He was a chainsaw rep for Stihl for 34 years, retiring in 2000. He started Vermillion River Rafting in 1997. He married Ruth Johnson on March 26, 2002.
Bob was a loving family man. He enjoyed playing cards, bird watching, hunting, fishing, traveling, singing karaoke, and was a pioneer in chainsaw carving. He went to auctions and bought Lowell crocks. He was an avid Green Bay Packer and Chicago Blackhawks fan. He lived a great life, and he did it his way.
Bob is survived by his wife Ruth Kreiser-Herbst of Oglesby; one son Mark (Rebecca) Herbst of Yuba City, CA; two daughters, Karen Noto of Tonica and Lori (Jimmie) Resco- Garcia of Las Vegas, NV; three step-daughters, Karla (John) Weger of Oglesby, Joan (Kenneth) Harris of Peru and Debbie (Bud) Stein of Tinley Park; four step-sons, Greg (Sherry) Kreiser of Lostant, Eric (Rachel) Kreiser of Tonica, Brett Hazen of Oglesby and Billy Hazen of Mendota; six grandchildren, Katherine, Alexander, Lauren, Kari, Travis and Danielle; three great-grandchildren, Berek, Beckham and Charlie; many other step-grandchildren and great step-grandchildren; and one sister Sandra Gabelt of New Mexico.
He was preceded in death by his parents, one daughter Beth Ann, one brother Donald, one sister Doris, and one step-daughter Patricia "Patty".
