John Frambes Obituary

Rev. John C. Frambes, OFM

September 10, 2024

Rev. John C. Frambes, OFM, 77, of Beach Haven, NJ passed away on September 10, 2024. Fr. John was formerly of Margate City, NJ, where he graduated from Atlantic City High School and later received his received his Master of Divinity from the Christ of King Seminary. As a young man, he enjoyed the shore and working as a lifeguard. He found the beach a place of peace and reflection.

Fr. Frambes joined the Franciscans in 1973 and made his simple vows on August 24, 1974. He was ordained to the priesthood on December 8, 1979, and worked more than half his career at Siena College in Loudonville, NY, as Campus Minister, VP of Student Affairs, and then Director of Campus Ministry. He also served in Campus Ministry at Guilford College and UNCG, both in North Carolina.

Fr. John was the Pastor of St. Joseph Church in Wilmington, Delaware, from 2005 until 2011. He thoroughly enjoyed his ministry to the African American community at St. Joseph's Parish and would often speak with great affection for the members of that parish community.

After a short period of time at a Trappist Monastery, John found his way back to Long Beach Island. He was the Parochial Vicar at St. Francis of Assisi Parish from 1993 to 1994 and again from 2014 until now. At St. Francis, he enjoyed working in the Pre Cana Ministry, Chaplain of the local Secular Franciscan Fraternity and Friends of Francis and Clare, and worked closely in the St. Francis Parish Prison Ministry. John strongly desired to help those who were often disenfranchised from society and/or the church. He was always ready and willing to reach out to let them know that they were valued, welcomed, and appreciated.

Predeceased by his parents, Horace and Mary Frambes. Fr. John is survived by his brother, William Frambes; and his aunts, Helen Wilson and Anne Albrich; along with his cousins.

A Viewing will be offered on Sunday, September 15, 2024, from 4 p.m. until the time of the Wake Service at 7 p.m. at St. Francis of Assisi Church, 4700 Long Beach Blvd., Brant Beach, NJ 08008. Another Viewing will be offered on Monday, September 16th from 10 a.m. until the time of the Funeral Mass at 11 a.m. at St. Francis of Assisi Church. Burial will follow on Tuesday at 1 p.m. at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery, 52 Totowa Ave, Totowa, NJ. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to a Memorial Fund at St. Francis of Assisi Church in honor of Father John.

John and I were friends since we were 4 years old. We walked to the Oxford Ave School together each day. We even took a detour to the Water Works to see the goldfish on our first day of kindergarten and we both got into deep trouble. I have such fond memories of him as my dear friend. I´m so proud of him and the life he lead. My condolences to his family and friends. He will be missed. Rest in peace, John!

I met John when his family moved to Margate. He always seemed to be a fine person, and judging from his obituary, he followed an admirable path as he matured. I remember him fondly and hope that his friends´ and family members´ fondest memories comfort them.

John and I attended Rutgers and graduated together. I still have a copy of Thomas Merton's The Seven Storey Mountain which he bought for me from a used book store as a graduation present. I went on to Vietnam, graduate school, and elsewhere. John took the truer path. We lost touch with one another so many years ago.

We were so saddened to learn of Fr John's passing. He was a part of our wedding and spoke some very meaningful words. For almost 50 years we have not forgotten his message. In 1981 he baptized our first child. Knowing how much he impacted our lives, we are sure there are many lives that he touched over the years. Rest in peace

I only met Father John a few years ago. Father John was very good to my Mother when she was going through her end of life. He would visit at Moms house and we would talk about Atlantic County and things we had in common. Father John was a kind decent man.
RIP Father John

Saddened to read of Fr.John´s passing. He was the son of my great Aunt Mary´s and I have fond memories of visiting them in Ventnor growing up. May the Lord give Bill and family and friends peace and comfort at this time.
