Richard Land Obituary

Richard Duke Land

November 21, 1944 - October 4, 2025

Richard Duke Land, Jr. of Warrenton, VA, departed this life on October 4, 2025. Richard was born on November 21, 1944, in Exeter, England to Richard D. Land, Sr. and Thelma Buley, who met during World War II. Richard was the eldest of eight children. His brothers are John, Paul, Arthur and Dennis; and sisters, Lorraine, Lita, and Nita.

Richard is predeceased by his Father in March 1981, his Mother on February 21, 2020, and his brother, Arthur. His greatest joy, his son, Matthew Justin Land passed away on February 28, 2018.

Richard was well known throughout the Warrenton area. He was often seen walking his large poodle, Luke, up and down Main street. He also enjoyed driving Luke in his convertible around the town.

Richard began his professional career supporting the White House Communications Agency. He was involved in the early development and deployment of satellite based communications systems. He often spoke about his travel to China with President Nixon and his role establishing communications networks for the President and other members of the White House staff. He continued to serve as a consultant in this field for many years.

For a short period of time, Richard worked for Colgan Air, transporting aircrews from the airport at Manassas to Dulles, and to other locations.

Richard will also be remembered fondly for his kindness and generosity. His fellow neighbors in the Waterloo South community will forever recall his engagement with community activities and general support for his neighbors. He was also an avid University of Virginia football team fan.

A Mass of Christian burial will be held at Richard's church, St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church in Warrenton on November 15, 2025 at 11am.

We were Richard´s neighbors for almost 15 years in Warrenton and have so many fond memories. We enjoyed a few years of UVA football games with him in Charlottesville, and were always happy to spend time with him. I just saw of his passing as I looked to send him a Christmas greeting. I´m so sorry for your loss, and will remember Richard with great fondness.

My husband and I met Richard in Virginia, many years ago. He was a gentleman, kind, generous of spirit. He and I enjoyed good red wine with meals . I visited with him a couple times in NC when I relocated. Always a pleasure to share time with him. He will be missed.

Richard was the fun uncle everyone deserves to have. He had the best sense of humor and always knew how to make you laugh and smile.

He was a true gentleman, and a man of pride, never wanting to trouble you with anything and always had a way of lifting up your spirit.

Along with his honor also came his impeccable taste and style, and when it came to his wardrobe, he was always dressed to the nines.

His love for dogs was unmatched - Mattie and Luke were his pride and joy. He always had a funny saying that I have taken to use myself, calling them "good bad dogs" among other endearing nicknames.

I miss my uncle dearly, but he will always be remembered for the amazing man and friend he was. He was the kind of man I aspire to be.

Love you Uncle Richard

I did not know Richard well and only met him briefly, but he was always a gentleman, a perfect host, and a very thoughtful man. His funeral service was such a wonderful tribute, and I hope he can now reunite with his son Matthew for eternity.

Barbara and I offer our condolences for the passing of this lovely man, who shared joy with all those who had the good fortune to know him. We loved to chat with him whenever he was in town and walked his white poodle Luke by our home. He never recovered from the passing of his son. We hope he has found peace in heaven.
