Janet Hebert Obituary

Janet Hebert, born September 23, 1942, passed away on September 24, 2024, at age 82. She grew up in the Irish Channel in New Orleans attending public schools. She was the daughter of Sydney & Ernestine Scheibe. While attending Alcee Fortier Senior High School, she worked part-time for Pan American Life Insurance Co. After marrying Ransdell Hebert, they moved to New Orleans East. The loving mother of 5 children, Janet took a very active role in the children's schools. At Sherwood Forest she volunteered with the PTA, school library, room mother among many other needs. The Livingston Middle School library also benefitted from her volunteering. She spent so much time doing things with her children. Bringing up her family in the love of God, Janet and Ransdell were very active members at Resurrection of Our Lord Catholic Church. Living by example, she brought the Holy Eucharist to people beyond the church. Pendleton Memorial Methodist Hospital, various senior citizen apartment buildings and shut-ins at home were some of the places she ministered. As a 30-year member of the Society of St. Vincent DePaul, she would 'seek and find the forgotten and poor.' As such, Janet was awarded the Regina Matrum Award and the Order of St. Louis by the Archdiocese of New Orleans. A car accident after Katrina left Janet with an incomplete spinal cord injury in her neck. She lived just a few weeks short of 19 years as a quadriplegic, inspiring others to never give up. Our thanks to Touro Hospital for her partial recovery. By not giving up, she was able to walk with a walker for many years. Janet was a resident of Slidell since 2005. Her favorite time was spent on her grandchildren, puzzles, Blue Bell Ice Cream and her cats. In lieu of flowers, please send a donation to St. Vincent DePaul at 58025 St. Genevieve Lane, Slidell, LA 70460. She is survived by her husband of 62 years, Ransdell Hebert. He called her "his steady date since '58.". Her children Angelique Blohm (Mike), Suzanne Gammage (Howard), Steven Hebert (Kristel) and Catherine Vining. A son, Mark Hebert (Suzea), passed away in August 2017. Janet is also survived by grandchildren Christopher, Michelle, Billy, Melissa, Devon, Destiny, Lorraine, Theresa and Christine, and a great-grandchild, Isaiah. Relatives and friends are invited to attend a funeral Mass at St. Genevieve Church in Slidell, La. on Wednesday, October 2, 2024, at 11 am. The visitation will begin at 9 am. A graveside service will immediately follow the funeral Mass in Greenwood Cemetery, New Orleans, La.

Every day, my Mama would read the obituaries and let us know if there was someone we might have known. She would cut out the ones we knew and give it to us.
