Alden Lien Obituary

Alden Gerhard Lien

November 2, 1929 - October 12, 2024

Alden Gerhard Lien, died peacefully on the 12th of October 2024, surrounded by his loving family. Preceded in death by his wife of 72 years, Alden is survived by his children: Kathryn Jo (Richard), Steven Jon (Crystal), Eric Jay, and David Joel (Teresa). He was also blessed with six grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren.

Aged 94, he was born on November 2, 1929, to Gullick and Anna Lien in Decorah Iowa. He attended local schools before heading to Luther College, where he received his B.A. in business administration. On December 22, 1951, he married his high-school sweetheart, and moved to Houston, Texas while he was serving in the Air Force. In 1953, he received his MBA from the University of Houston. After the birth of the daughter, Kathryn, he and Helen settled in La Crosse where they would raise their family. He began his career at Lutheran Hospital in 1955, overseeing its newly formed personnel department. He would remain at Gundersen-Lutheran, working his way up in various administrative roles, until his retirement in 1991.

While his family was growing, Al also enjoyed spending time in his basement workshop, where he restored antique furniture and worked on his extensive collection of clocks. After retiring, Al spent many days working with Habitat for Humanity, using his skills to help build housing for the local community. He remained a faithful member of Our Redeemer Lutheran Church, overseeing duties such as ushering and church finances. Al and Helen always enjoyed traveling to visit their children, grand-children, and great-grand-children, as well as exploring various locations around the world.

Al was a humble, kind, and gentle soul, much loved by family and friends who will miss him dearly.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, October 18, 2024 at Our Redeemer Lutheran Church, 2135 Weston Street, La Crosse. Pastor Mark Bartusch will officiate and burial will be in Woodlawn Cemetery. A visitation will be held from 9:30 a.m. until time of service.

The Lien family would like to thank the staff at Eagle Crest South for their care and concern for Al over the past seven years.

Dr Jeff Thompson

October 17, 2024

In the middle of the night 1984.... He was Called by a doctor he had never met... told about a disease he had never heard of... asked to arrange something he had never done.... And without hesitation he saved a baby´s life by flying him halfway across the country to get a very special treatment ... Al was a humble strong servant leader.
