Evelyn Shackelford Obituary

Evelyn (Sutton) Shackelford Hookerton - Evelyn Sutton Shackelford, 92, long-time resident of Hookerton, passed away on Sunday, November 3, 2024. Evelyn was born on August 30,1932 to Jack and Cornelia Sutton in Lenoir County. She graduated from Wheat Swamp High School in 1950 and soon after married the love of her life, Jerry Hartsfield Shackelford. Jerry was her partner in life and in business. She had a mind for numbers and logistics and put it to work helping Jerry establish successful businesses in North Carolina and Kentucky. Evelyn's steady support, wise counsel, and strong accounting skills were primary contributors to their entrepreneurship. Jerry often credited Evelyn for her business acumen. Married young and starting from nothing, they built a beautiful life together with love as the foundation. Evelyn was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Jerry; her son, Jerry Dwain Shackelford; sister Hazel Hardy, brothers-in-law Jesse Ray Shackelford, Frank Shackelford, William "Bill" Shackelford, Jasper "Pete" Sugg, Joseph Lemuel Hardy and Frank Hill; and sisters-in-law Sara Sugg, Mae Carol Hill and Hattie Lou Shackelford. Her surviving family includes her daughter, Susan Shackelford Baker; grandchildren, Jay Shackelford (Laura); Jon Shackelford (Melissa); and Sarah Sutton Baker; and great-grandchildren Jeri Shackelford, Jonna Shackelford and David Shackelford. A service of remembrance will be held 11 AM Friday, November 8th, at the Hookerton Christian Church with Reverend Allen Ham officiating. Interment will immediately follow at the Hookerton Methodist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends 6 - 8 PM Thursday evening at Taylor-Tyson Funeral Service in Snow Hill.
