Grace Cooper Obituary

Grace Mary Goss Cooper

July 25, 1929 - November 1, 2023

Sacramento, California - Grace was born in Oak Park, Illinois, to William T. and Grace E. Goss. She graduated early from high school to attend Smith College in Northampton, Massachusetts. At 19 she married the love of her life, Andrew Jackson "Jack" Cooper. Grace was a wonderful mother who loved to cook, play the piano, sew, garden, play bridge and tennis. She was a very intelligent and independent woman, kind and generous to a fault, and a voracious reader. She worked at Kit Carson, Cal Middle School, McClatchy High, Photo and Sound Company and Mendocino Middle School.

Grace was a strong believer in human rights, and truly cared for people. She helped new immigrants with citizenship applications, volunteered as an election worker, and spoke out against racial injustice.

Preceded in death by her best friend and husband Jack, her parents Grace and Bill, her sister Barbara and husband Bert, and her sister-in-law Mary Jean Cooper Labadie. Survived by her sisters Pamela (Robert) Wham, and Helen (Bennett) Zeigler; children William T. Cooper, Georgia Cooper Giere (husband Norman), Eileen Cooper Alderette, and Alison Cooper; grandchildren Sara and Bobby Alderette, and Tam Alvarez; and many nieces, nephews, and extended family.

The family would like to thank the staff of UC Davis Medical Center and Greenhaven Villa RCFE.

Private services will be held.

Should friends desire, contributions may be sent to Americans United for the Separation of Church and State, or a charity of your choice.

Sending condolences to all of Grace´s family. Grace was a True North kind of woman. Like most woman of her generation, she had a brimming sense to help and guide. Along with her huge heart and her Do the Right Thing mentality, she brought her integrity everywhere she went. Love. Celeste Tzikas and Family

My parents and I (as an 8 years of age kid) moved to J Parkway in 1955 and Grace and Jack were our next door neighbors. I thought Grace was the most beautiful woman I´d ever known. For a while, there were 2 "Jacks" living side by side (my Dad - Jack also) and they were wonderful neighbors. Sadly, Grace and Jack moved after a short time here. I am grateful to read that she had such a fine life. Not only was I impressed by her beauty "back then" but also I now know I would have truly enjoyed knowing her as I grew to be an adult. Thank you for sharing highlights of her life in this article. They gladden my heart.
I send you-her fortunate family-my deepest condolences at this time of her passing. Many caring blessings to you.
