Joseph Jackson Obituary
1935 - 2024
Cedar City, Utah-Joseph Elmer Jackson (88) passed away June 13th at his home in Cedar City Utah surrounded by his family. He was born November 7th, 1935 at his Aunt Zula's home in Fillmore, Utah to John Bryan and Velma Robison Jackson. He graduated from Fillmore High School where he excelled in both academics and sports. Dad attended the University of Utah on a football and track scholarship majoring in banking and finance. He then attended law school also at the University of Utah graduating in 1962. Dad met and married Sherrie Ann Ott daughter of James Alvin and Virginia Spencer Ott from St. George Utah in 1957. They became the proud parents of six children Bryan (Jackie), Brad (Pam), Michelle (Monte), Brett (Lisa), Barry (Macayla) and Nichole (Cody). His posterity includes 24 grandchildren and 19 great grandchildren.
Dad served as the city attorney for Milford and Beaver from 1965-72 and city attorney for Cedar City from 1972-77. In 1977 Governor Scott Matheson appointed him Judge of the 5th District Juvenile Court which at the time covered nine counties. During his judicial service he initiated a number of successful programs in the juvenile system that are used nationwide even today. In 1987 he was honored by the Utah State Bar as the outstanding juvenile judge of the year. Joe and Sherrie were called to serve a mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints in Palmyra, New York from Aug. 2002-Feb. 2004.
Dad we will miss your wonderful sense of humor, wise counsel, dutch oven dinners, beautiful garden and unconditional love. It can be said Joe Jackson never knew a stranger. To him every person in the world was a friend he hadn't met yet.
Viewing to be held Fri. June 21st, 6:00-8:00 pm at Southern Utah Mortuary 190 North 300 West Cedar City. Funeral services Sat. June 22nd, 11:00 am at the Cedar City Stake Center 155 East 400 South. Joe and I were on the U. of U. track team together and in law school together. He was indeed a fine gentleman. It was always a pleasure to meet and talk with him at various law-related events.

Joe was an outstanding jurist and wonderful person. I knew Joe mostly in a judicial capacity. Every judge in the state of Utah loved Joe and thought highly of him. He had an outstanding sense of humor. Joe will be missed by all of us
