Mary Murphy Obituary

Mary Murphy
04/20/1932 - 01/23/2025
Our beloved mother Mary Murphy passed away on Thursday evening, January 23rd in San Francisco. Mary was the eldest child, born in 1932, to Kathleen and Tim Healy in their newly adopted hometown of San Francisco. She often shared stories of her happy childhood, surrounded by cousins such as the Healy's, McAuliffe's, and Devine's, who attended nearby St. Johns school and parish with her. Tim and Kathleen both immigrated from Ireland and joined family and friends in San Francisco. Mary experienced early loss, though, with the passing of her mother, when she was a young teenager. Mary went on to be a hands-on big sister to her younger brother, Daniel Healy, and also a devoted daughter to her father, Tim Healy.
After graduating high school, Mary started her work life as a civil servant working for the State of California Department of Social Services, where she coordinated adoptions and assisted in the delivery of newborns to their new homes. Prophetically, Mary soon met fellow San Franciscan and love of her life, Edmund Murphy, and together, they raised a family of five children in the Sunset district of San Francisco. Mary returned to work when her kids were older as an employee of the DMV in San Francisco.
If you had a mom that stayed up late with you while you finished a paper that was due the next morning, then you knew our mom. She was always there for us offering support, wisdom and a loving and nurturing homelife. Her busy days included volunteering – whether it was cub scouts or whatever was needed at Holy Name school and parish, Mary was a helper.
Once the kids were raised, Mary enjoyed traveling with Ed, spending time with their family, her friends in the Hibernian Club, keeping up with her cousins and being the "glue" person in the family who connected everyone, near and far. She also valued her family's roots in County Cork and enjoyed any occasion that celebrated her Irish heritage.
To her kids, Mary was always known for her positive attitude and looking on the bright side. Her life exemplified resilience, grace and always seeing the best in every person and situation. Our memories of our mom are only filled with memories of her kindness, selflessness, lack of judgement, openness to others and overall, enjoyment of life. Also, of her devotion to her faith, even remembering every word to the Hail Mary's and Our Father's that were said with her in her final days.
Mary is pre-deceased by her husband, Ed, and her brother, Dan Healy. Mary is survived by her five children: Colleen Doumeng (Paul Doumeng), Kathleen Marshall (John Marshall), Maureen Lynds (Greg Lynds), Dennis Murphy, Kevin Murphy (Dora Murphy); her eleven grandchildren: Danielle Feldman, Nicole and Johnathan Doumeng, Jeff and Kiera Marshall, Scott, Brad and Kyle Lynds Ryan, Dylan and Caitlyn Murphy; and her two great granddaughters: Kelly and Natalie Feldman. Rest now mom, until we meet again.
A Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Friday, February 7, 2025 at 10:30am at Holy Name of Jesus Parish, 1555 39th Ave, San Francisco.

I had the privilege of meeting Mary through the marriage of my son to her wonderful daughter, Maureen. My fondest memory of Mary come from the time we spent together caring for our grandchildren..... those were joyful moments filled with laughter, shared stories and our love we both had for them...Mary had a truly caring and nurturing presence... I will always cherish the bond we shared through our grandchildren.... Mary will never be forgotten and her spirit will always be with us..
