Betty was born on September 17, 1930 on the family farm in Franklin Township, Delano, MN as the daughter of Clarence and Goldie (Keplinger) Matter Sr. On October 29, 1949, Betty was united in marriage to James A. Boll in Delano, MN.
Betty was a hard worker, a strong woman, raising her nine children on a farm outside St. Bonifacius, and a lover of many things, but her greatest love was her family, who were recipients of her love in many ways. One of those ways was through providing for her family by growing a variety of flowers and vegetables in her enormous garden. The task of weeding was shared with the family: one of her many lessons to her children about hard work and responsibility. The fruits of her labor resulted in hundreds of jars of canned goods, including sauerkraut, which were stored in the stone cellar and provided food for her large family. Her vegetable and flower gardens also provided many trips to the County and State Fairs, through 4-H, which made her very proud. Along with gardening, Betty raised and butchered thousands of chickens, including laying hens, from which the eggs were sold. Butchering day became an all-hands-on-deck family event, providing for her children and their families. Betty also expressed her love by attending her children's and grandchildren's various activities and events. Christmas was her favorite time of the year, and her love was evident in the decorating, all the food she made, and the many varieties of cookies she baked; it was the one time of the year where she didn't cut any corners.
There were many titles that Betty had over her lifetime. Before she held the title of "Mom" and "Grandma" she shared the title of "Twin" with her sister Bonny, whom she dearly missed. She and Bonny are now reunited and have likely increased the decibel level in heaven with their constant chatter. "Baker" was the title she took pride in for almost 25 years at Jubilee Foods in Mound, MN, until she retired at the age of 79. She was also a competitive volleyball player, a Bingo enthusiast, a word search connoisseur, and a master puzzler: anyone who stopped by to see her would be readily recruited to help sort and place pieces for her latest project.
Betty was a devoted Mother, Grandmother, and Great Grandmother; she was encouraging and always there when her kids needed her the most. She will be affectionately remembered by many for her warm hugs and juicy kisses. Her love for her family was expressed to every person she met as she bragged about her 37 grandchildren and 83 (and counting) great-grandchildren.
Betty was preceded in death by James Boll; grandchildren Gavin Jopp, Ava Joswick; sisters Dorothy (Pete) Jamma, Marion (Germain "Bud") Boll, Pam (Bill) Zins, Bonnie (Orville) Pawelk; brother Clarence "Buzz" (Virginia) Matter; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law George Hermann, Ben Domjahn, Marian and Sal Snicker, Bede and Lois Boll.
