Norma Haywood Obituary

Norma Cornelia Wall Haywood, beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, educator, and faithful servant of God, entered eternal rest on August 21, 2025, at the age of 98.

Born in Raleigh, North Carolina, on March 22, 1927, Norma dedicated her life to education, community, and faith. She was a proud graduate of Fisk University and later earned advanced degrees and certification from North Carolina Central University and Duke University. A trailblazer in education, she became the first Black woman principal in North Raleigh and led with vision, compassion, and innovation. Over her decades of service, she was recognized as Principal of the Year, inducted into the National Women's Hall of Fame, and honored with numerous awards for her leadership and commitment to children.

Beyond her public accomplishments, Norma's essence shone brightest in how she loved. She was a devoted wife to her late husband, David Lorenzo Haywood, Sr., for 63 years, and together they raised three children whose legacy grew to include eight grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. Family was her greatest joy-she spoke of them often, celebrated their milestones, and welcomed them into her home for summers, holidays, and everyday gatherings filled with food, laughter, and love. Her warmth extended beyond her own family, embracing countless young people as her own.

She cherished flowers and music-symbols of her joy, creativity, and faith. Stylish to the end, always adorned with jewelry, lipstick, and often her signature purple, she carried herself with grace and strength. Norma was a straight shooter who spoke the truth with love, always ensuring those around her felt seen, valued, and cared for. She was a faithful member of St. Ambrose Episcopal Church, where her ministry and service reflected her deep love for Christ. She was also a proud member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., Jack and Jill of America, The Links, Inc., the Daughter of Isis Kabala Court No. 67, and numerous other civic and community organizations.

Norma Haywood will be remembered as a matriarch of her family and community, a guiding presence whose wisdom, kindness, and faith anchored generations. She made each person feel seen, appreciated and valued. Norma not only left behind a record of extraordinary achievements, but also a legacy of love, faith, and hope that will endure in all who were blessed to know her.

She is survived by her daughters, Denise and Marielle; her eight grandchildren; her eight great-grandchildren; her sister, Audrey Wall; and a host of nieces, nephews, extended family, and beloved friends.

I was hired, by Mrs. Haywood, as her secretary, at Phillips Elementary, in 1976. Mrs. Haywood was one of the brightest, most compassionate and loving person I have ever known. I enjoyed watching her when she interacted with the children. She was loving and strong when the occasion arose and I believe the children got that message when she spoke with them. She was one of my all time favorite people and I feel blessed to have known her. My thoughts and prayers go out to her family.

Mrs. Haywood was the Principal at Effie Green when my two children were there. She was a wonderful educator and person. She influenced thousands of students in a positive way. We are all better off because of her.
