Marjorie Josephine (Jo) Scott Passed away September 5, 2024 in
Abilene, Texas. She was born September 7, 1930 in Corbin Kentucky.
Jo grew up in Winchester, Kentucky and graduated from Clark County High School. She married Freddie Leo Scott on June 3, 1951 in Winchester, Kentucky. They lived in Beaver Dam, Kentucky; Hart, Texas; Stinett, Texas; Clifton, Arizona;
Sweetwater, Texas; and
Abilene, Texas before Freddie passed away in 1997. They were married for 46 years, and had one child, Fred (Derf) William Scott.
She earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from McMurray College in
Abilene, Texas and a Master of Education degree from Sul Ross State University in Alpine, Texas. She served as a teacher, Program Chairman and Director of Special Programs at Texas State Technical Institute (TSTC) in
Sweetwater, Texas from the opening day of school in 1970 until she retired in June of 1987. During that time, she started and wrote curriculum for secretarial programs.
Before entering education, she worked for Phillip Petroleum Co. in Borger, Texas and Mountain States Telephone Co. in Clifton, Arizona.
Jo loved traveling and watching grandkids and great grandkids participate in activities. She was the first spouse and mother to have both her husband and son inducted into the Texas Tennis Coaches Association Hall of Fame. She was always available and willing to help those who were in need or hurting. She was adamant about keeping family strong by encouraging and planning family reunions.
Jo was a member of Southern Hills Church of Christ in Abilene. Her faith as a Christian was strong and obvious to those who knew her.
She is survived by her son Fred William (Derf) Scott and wife Judy Renee Scott of
Abilene, Texas. Brother William (Bill) Conlee Johnson of
Sweetwater, Texas. Grandchildren Freddie Curtis Scott of
Abilene, Texas; Kama Renee Erby and husband Erik Erby of Mansfield, Texas; Kara Jo Bello and husband Danny Bello of Mansfield, Texas. Great-grandchildren Paxton Erby, Jensyn Erby, Silas Erby, Beckett Bello all of Mansfield, Texas.
She was surrounded by numerous nieces and nephews that she held close to her heart.
She was preceded in death by her husband Freddie, parents father Arthur G. Johnson and mother Bernice Conlee Johnson. Sisters Indianola Aldridge of Mount Pleasant, Texas; Wyama Weatherred of Kress, Texas; Katherine Fugitt of Fairfield, Ohio; and a brother, Arthur George Johnson Jr. of Winchester, Kentucky.
A celebration of life visitation is planned for Saturday, September 14, 2024 at the home of her son, Fred (Derf) Scott at 3450 S. 20th in
Abilene, Texas 79605 from 2:00 to 5:00 pm.
A tentative gravesite service is planned for July 21, 2025 in Winchester, Kentucky.
Arrangements were made with Girdner Funeral Home in
Abilene, Texas.
