Katherine "Kay" Nell Griffith Katherine "Kay" Mondrik Griffith, age 89 of Seguin, formerly of Big Spring and Cameron, passed away on May 16, 2025. Katherine was born on August 15, 1935, in Cameron, Texas to Katherine Nell (White) and Alvin Joe Mondrik.
Kay graduated from Cameron Yoe High School in 1953 and completed 2 years at The University of Texas at Austin. She met her husband, George Guy Griffith, while attending The University. Kay was dedicated and driven by her Christian Faith. She put God first. She loved and was devoted to her husband, loved her family, and was close to friends throughout her life. Guy was a career Air Force Fighter Pilot and Kay was steadfast in her commitment to this service. Following retirement from the military, she dedicated years to the public education system in Big Spring, Texas, where she made her home for 50 years. She loved the fellowship within the community and truly felt there was nothing more beautiful or God-given than a west Texas sunset. Her children appreciated and frequently relied on her advice mostly delivered with a twinkle in her eyes and a tad of wit. Even over her final days, she offered sage advice to her children. Kay also had a passion for all wildlife and especially had a deep affection for her dogs and wild birds.
Her grandparents immigrated to Cameron, Texas from Europe in the late 1800's. Kay grew up in Cameron and enjoyed life as an only child surrounded by doting grandmother, parents, aunts and uncles. When her husband served our country in war, she returned to Cameron. During her life she lived in Texas, Kansas, Florida, New York, Nevada, Germany, and California. She traveled extensively with her family while living in each location. Kay was a guiding light for family, the glue, throughout her life, particularly during their periodic moves. Her love of travel continued through their retirement as she loved a good road trip with sightseeing and time for reading. One of Kay and Guy's favorite spots was the Smokey Mountains where they often returned.
During Kay's final days, she frequently reminded visiting family she had a happy full life. People were naturally drawn to Kay, even the nurses at the hospital vied to be with her. She was a force of nature and will be sorely missed, yet remembered with love.
Survivors include her loving husband of 70 years, George Guy Griffith; son, Joseph Frank Griffith and wife Mavis Ray Griffith ; daughters, Mary Katherine Griffith Balderach and husband Tom Balderach; Rebecca Lynn Griffith Keen, and husband Bobby Keen; 7 grandchildren (Heath Griffith, Katherine Griffith Ratliff, Guy Griffith, Jeffrey Castle, Jacob Castle, Olivia Keen Gardner, and Emily Keen Ten Brook; and 7 great-grandchildren (Mary Mavis Ratliff, Anna Heath Ratliff, Macky Griffith, Cates Griffith, Lotus Castle, Gwen Gardner, and Zoe Gardner).
