Kathleen Davies Obituary

Kathleen Jean Davies (née Simpkin)

Peacefully, on October 22, 2024, Kathleen Davies passed away in McKenney Creek Hospice following a 10-month battle with acute myeloid leukaemia.

Predeceased by her mother, Kathleen is survived by her children Jeremy (Portage la Prairie, MB) and Carly (Diego) (Port Coquitlam, BC), her beloved granddaughter Amelia, as well as her siblings: Marion Kilfoyle (Howard) of Winnipeg, MB; Gary Simpkin (Bella) of Chilliwack, BC; Lynn Nielsen (Ken) of Orleans, ON; and Dale Hall (John) of Lake Havasu City, AZ, USA. She also leaves behind many nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews.

Kathleen was known as Kate by her friends, and Kathy by her family.

She attended Shaughnessy Park School and Sisler High School in Winnipeg, later studying hairdressing in Saskatoon. For 22 years, she worked as a hairdresser in Calgary, Winnipeg, and Abbotsford before transitioning to work as a Health Care Aide from 1999 until her retirement in 2019 in Agassiz BC. Kathy's sensitive, caring, and empathetic nature made this an ideal career for her and she was well liked by her co-workers and clients.

Kathy was known for her homemade breads, perogies, cakes, and pies. She said she started to learn to cook by watching the "Galloping Gourmet". She was also an avid gardener, growing vegetables and flowers, and her last garden was enjoyed by her granddaughter Amelia who would pick strawberries and tomatoes with her.

She enjoyed travelling to visit family in Winnipeg and England. Her last two trips were to visit her sister in Arizona, and her son, Jeremy in Manitoba. She was grateful to enjoy the autumn in Manitoba one last time, as it was her favourite time of year.

Kathy will be deeply missed by her family and friends. She was very proud of her children and loved them dearly, and her grandchild, Amelia, was the light of her life.

The family thanks the staff of Burnaby Hospital, Eagle Ridge Hospital, and McKenney Creek Hospice for their care. A funeral service will be held from 11:00 AM to 1:30 PM on 2024-11-07 at St. Anthony's Parish, 7237 Morrow Rd, Agassiz, BC V0M 1A2. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Volunteer Cancer Drivers Society.

So many memories...back in our hairstyling days...we decided to have a Birthday party for ourselves at a restaurant Kate worked at in Calgary! We invited many guests! We wore bday sashes! Our theme was you had to be the character WE assigned you! We had so many giggles and laughs doing this! The place was packed. Fun was had by all and many attendees talked about it for a long time. Years later we would message each other close to our birthdays to ` get your Birthday sash ready!´Our lives have unfolded like chapters in a book and we celebrated each others stages in life. Thanks Kate for our friendship over the years and for all the good times we had and celebrated! The last chapter is closing.. Rest In the love of Jesus and all the angels! Until we meet again! Love your friend Always Barbe

I always enjoyed my visits with Aunt Kathy. She had a huge heart and was so easy to talk to. I loved her laugh and how much she cared. She will be dearly missed.

We became pen pals 18yrs ago, and we have kept in touch ever since, we planned to meet up, either I went over or she came to UK, but things always got in the way.
Kate was a caring person and we shared each other problems. She did so much for the ill people always going out of way to help them.
She loved her children, and was delighted when Carly had Amelia, and loved the English clothes I sent over to her, she managed to see the Xmas clothes I sent Amelia for Xmas which I was pleased.
So my dearest friend I will miss you but not forgotten, hope god will look after you and take you to a good place. X

Kate joined our Faith Study group at St. Patrick´s Parish and had a real gift for sharing life stories that made us laugh and cry. She was also very helpful with advice on health and medical issues. Her humility and self-effacement really touched us. After she was diagnosed with leukemia, before she had to leave our group, she expressed her genuine feelings of wonder and desire to be with God in heaven. We loved her dearly and continue to pray for all in the family. Kate is sorely missed.

I have so many beautiful memories of my sister from when she was little, always tagging along, to when we were teenagers. I remember us going to the ManPop Festival in 1970 and walking home from the Arena at 3 a.m. because the buses were no longer running. When we were a little older, we used to go bike riding together. Our trip to England in 2006 with Carly was such a fun time. But my best memory is when you came to visit me in Lake Havasu last year. Unfortunately after your first week I had a heart attack and spent the second week of your trip in hospital. You came to visit me everyday and told me how much you loved me. That love was reciprocated. I love you and will miss you forever. Until we meet again.

Kathy was one of my oldest and dearest friends. We met in kindergarten at Shaughnessy Park School and went through all of those years through Sisler High School. A fond funny memory was at my 8th birthday party when she ate 8 hotdogs! She was such a tiny girl and managed to eat 8 hotdogs! We laughed about that very recently. As pre- teens we hung out all the time and would walk to the Clark's Store on McPhillips Street to buy huge plastic costume jewelry rings and black eyeliner in a liquid that you could paint on your upper eyelid and then just peel it off after it dried. We did that over and over again. We used two tin cans tied with string through a hole in the ends to each take one into one of the two closets I had in my bedroom to play "apartments". Those were our telephones and we could hear each other speak through the wall separating the closets. We went to see Romeo and Juliet at the theatre when we were 13 and that memory has always stayed with me as we loved that movie. We bought the same green felt striped pants in grade 10 and wore them to school. I heard The Beatles "Revolution" for the first time when she played the record in her room on Burrows Avenue. We all loved The Beatles. After high school our paths ventured out but they always crossed again; in B.C when I moved to Coquitlam for a time and then Burnaby and Kathy was living then in Abbotsford but she drove out to see me in Coquitlam and came to stay for a visit in Burnaby. I visited in Abbotsford and met Carly when she was 5. Kathy and Carly came to my wedding when Kathy had moved back to Winnipeg. With face-book we stayed in touch and "spoke" on fb messenger all the time. Kathy was a kind and caring person with a quirky sense of humor and we laughed a lot growing up. Her suffering with that horrible illness is now over. I loved my dear friend and I will remember her always and pray that she is now happy and at peace in a place from where she can watch over her family. I send love and my deepest condolences to Carly and her family.

To our dear sister Kathy, we will love you forever. I remember pushing you in your carriage when you were just a baby for your afternoon nap......seems like yesterday. I remember when you lived with us in Calgary and we went roller skating on Saturday nights with friends. I remember how you enjoyed doing our hair and what a beautiful job you always did. I remember when your babies were born and how happy they made you. Thank you dear Kathy for all the wonderful memories that I have to hold onto until we meet again. Your loving sister, Lynn

My mum cared deeply for her friends, family, and animals. She was always willing to help-whether it was cooking a meal, mending clothes, or giving a haircut. She never hesitated to stop and rescue an animal she found outside alone. Her generosity and care were evident in the everyday things she did for others.
