Johnny Crouch Obituary

Missiouri City, Tx - Johnny Lee Crouch Jr.

March 7, 1932 - October 6, 2023

Coach Johnny Crouch, age 91, of McAllen Texas, passed away on October 6, 2023 in Missouri City, Texas. He resided with his daughter Kelley Kay and her husband Coach Albert Thomas. Battling dementia for many years, which he called, "Don't mention it," Coach Crouch expired peacefully at home in his sleep.

Johnny Lee Crouch Jr was born in Bethesda, Maryland on March 7,1932 to John Lee Crouch and Nettie Mae Williams. He survived a childhood shooting accident at age eleven. However, the injury didn't stop him from growing into an outstanding athlete. The family later moved to Chillicothe, Texas where Johnny attended high school and became a superb football and basketball player. He attended Paris Junior College and went on to Texas Christian University. He was team captain in 1955. After graduation he was drafted by the Green Bay Packers in the 8th round, but his career was cut short due to a shoulder injury.

Johnny moved to Corsicana, Texas to coach football and teach biology. There he met and married Rhonda Kay Stack on December 22, 1959. They were married until her passing in 2011. He continued his career coaching in Corsicana, Odessa, George West, Lubbock, McAllen, Pharr and Harlingen. Once he stopped coaching high school football, he taught elementary physical education at Sorenson Elementary in San Juan for another twelve years. He retired from a life in the public school system in 2002 at the age of seventy.

Johnny was known for his "larger than life" demeanor. He had a significant impact on thousands of athletes and students and his family is often pulled aside to hear a story about "Coach Crouch."

He is preceded in death by his parents John and Nettie Mae and his wife Rhonda Kay and survived by his children, John Lee Crouch III (Trey), Chance Ladayne Crouch (Bear), and Kelley Kay Thomas. In addition, he leaves behind ten grand children and ten great grand children.

Thoughts and Prayers to Kelly, Trey and Bear. I had the pleasure of coaching with Johnny at McAllen many years ago. We became good friends many years ago and kept in contact up until past few years. Not only was Johnny a great Coach, he was Bigger than Life guy. Many young men were blessed with the opportunity to be around John. He will be missed by Many. I am proud that I had the opportunity to work with Johnny.

A really great person. Played football & baseball under Coach at Odessa Permian. Can still see him running live plays against defense-- him without a helmet and only a towel around his neck. Definition of toughness. He made an impression and difference in a lot of young lives. So sorry for your loss. Mike Jordan

My Condolences to Kelley and family. I know how he will be missed with his big presence and great sense of humor. I have been blessed to have grown up down the street from the Crouch´s house in McAllen, and it was never a dull moment! Mr. Crouch was the same loving, strong, funny, and quick witted man in his old age just as I remember.
Rest in Peace Love, Tricia Chapa
