Maria Flores Obituary

Edinburg / Houston - On Friday, October 6, 2023, Maria Elizondo Flores passed on peacefully at the age of 96.

She was devoted mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and great-great-grandmother who loved to laugh, dance, entertain, and sing ranchera and mariachi music. A child of sharecroppers, Maria grew up during the Depression, which began a long life of finding joy and perseverance in difficult times. She lost her father, Bernardo Bazan Elizondo, at the age of five, but spoke often of his time as a POW in Germany during WWI. Her mother, Emma Garza Elizondo, was left a widow to manage the crops, raise six children, and await the birth of her seventh child.

Maria was a 16-year-old bride and a 17-year-old mother who raised six children of her own in Edinburg, Texas with her husband Alfredo. She felt that her greatest accomplishment was that she taught her children to be hard working, patriotic, and generous. She will be remembered for her love of song, a boisterous laugh, a child-like innocence, delicious tamales and empanadas, and tradition of hosting a full house for every holiday and special occasion.

She is survived by her six children, Elisandro (Elma) Flores, Alfredo (Linda) Flores Jr., Fernando Flores, Maria Ana (Joy) Flores, Ninfa (Ron) Arena, Azucena Flores; numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and a great-great-grandchild.

The family would like to thank Comfy Home and Choice Hospice for Maria's care in her final days.

Visitation will begin at 8:30 a.m. followed by a 10 a.m. Funeral service Friday, October 13, 2023, at Memorial Funeral Home, 208 E. Canton in Edinburg. Interment will follow at Hillcrest Memorial Park in Edinburg.
