Paul Ogonowski Obituary

Paul Ogonowski, 65, of Scranton, died peacefully Friday morning with family by his side at Geisinger Community Medical Center. He is survived by his wife and caretaker of 41 years, the former Shawna Chiappini.

Born Oct. 15, 1958, in South Scranton, he was the son of the late Stanley and Elsa Bleak Ogonowski. He attended Scranton Technical High School before enlisting in the United States Navy.

He enjoyed spending time with his family and was known to be a favorite uncle of two generations of nieces and nephews.

He also played a major role in his nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews' lives as a father figure to all. He was very involved in raising, teaching, caring for and rough housing with them as if they were his own.

His favorite holiday was the Fourth of July. For many years, he was known for lighting up the skies over the South Side area with his spectacular fireworks display. These shows became a beloved tradition, eagerly anticipated and enjoyed by many. He also enjoyed watching sports, especially watching the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Paul is survived by a sister, Janet Willauer, Throop; beloved nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews. He was preceded in death by a sister, Mary Kimble; and brothers, Stanley Ogonowski Jr. and Thomas Ogonowski.

The family would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to Geisinger CMC emergency department, intensive care unit staff and PCP Dr. Sanjay Saxena for the exceptional/supportive care they provided. Thank you.

A blessing service will be held Thursday at 7 p.m. at the Nicholas Chomko Funeral Home, 1132 Prospect Ave., South Scranton. Family and friends will be received Thursday, 5 to 7 p.m. at the funeral home. Interment in Fairview Memorial Park will be private at the convenience of the family.
