Rosemary Martin Garvey, R.N., "Grandma Rose" and "Aunt Rose," 96, passed away peacefully with family at her side on Thursday at Marywood Heights, Scranton. She was preceded in death by her husband, Gerard H. Garvey.
Born July 25, 1927, to the late Anthony and Mary McDonough Martin, she was the last surviving member of the class of 1945 at Holy Rosary High School, then it was onto the Mercy School of Nursing, followed by a more than 35 year career at Mercy Hospital. She was a R.N. until she left us!
An active member of Holy Rosary Parish, now Mary, Mother of God Parish, for her entire life, she had a very strong faith and was a regular St. Ann's Novena attendee. She was one of the first lay persons in the parish, making communion visits to the homebound and a block party volunteer. Throughout her life she was genuinely generous in all things. She enjoyed her regular trips to the casino and crocheting; her afghans and scrubbies (they were crocheted too) were favorite gifts for many. However, her greatest moments were with her grandchildren, and more recently, great-grandchildren.
Rosemary spent the last three years as a resident of Marywood Heights, where she was very happy, enjoying bingo, watching her game shows and attending Masses. The family thanks the many caring staff members who loved her and provided her with safe, final years. We must also thank Dr. Barry Minora, her physician and friend for much of her life. When she may not have been listening to us, she would listen to him, and we will always be thankful for his kind care of her.
Rosemary is survived by her four children, Gerard (Mary Ann), Bernard (Margaret), Patrick (Mary Ann), and Timothy (Jenifer); grandchildren, Meghan Long (Chad), Maureen Howard (Taylor), Elizabeth Garvey (Josh), Jennifer Cavalieri (Corey), Samantha Garvey (Sean), Patrick Garvey, Timothy Garvey (Myriah) and Grace Moore (JD); great-grandchildren, Nathan and Andrew Long, John Taylor VI and Eileen Rose Howard, Bronson and Giovanni Cavalieri, and Clara Rosemary and Anastazja Garvey. Rosemary is also survived by her second family that her boys were raised with, the seven Price nieces and nephews, District Judge Joanne Corbett (James), Attorney Joseph (Atty. Judy), Anthony, Maureen Bender (William), Rosemary Van Wert (Jack Cooper), Martin (Jean) and Atty. Brian (Michelle), and their beautiful families. She is also survived by many more nieces and nephews.
In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by her sister, Shirley and her husband Joseph Price Sr., who were like second parents to the Garvey boys, and Tony Price's Wife, Kathy.
The family will receive friends on Monday from 5 until 7 p.m. at the Edward Knight O'Donnell Funeral Home LLC, 323 William St., Scranton. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Tuesday at 10 a.m. in Holy Rosary Church, Mary Mother of God Parish, 320 William St., Scranton. Those attending are kindly asked to proceed directly to the church. Interment will follow at the Cathedral Cemetery, Scranton.
In lieu of flowers and Masses, memorial contributions can be made to Mary, Mother of God Parish, 316 William St., Scranton, PA 18508 and Marywood Heights, 2500 Adams Ave., Scranton, PA 18509.

I only met Granda Rose once or twice but I always felt like I knew her. So many wonderful stories of her kindness and love of her family. May she rest now in the arms of the angels. May you all be peaceful knowing what good care you took of her.

Met Rose many years ago at Mercy Hospital. She was the loveliest person, always so kind and thoughtful of others. Rest in peace, Rose, heaven has gained another angel. Deepest sympathy to her family.

A good life is a poor epitaph for someone who meant so much to so many. I only know of her good works through her son Tim, who has always been a fine gentleman and good friend. May she rest in peace and always be remembered with love.

Garvey family,
I did not know your mom but back in the 80´s my daughter took dance lessons with her granddaughter at Civic Ballet. She was always there (crocheting) so must have been on "pick up duty." Before the recital she mentioned to me not to forget to bring flowers for my daughter as this was customary for a recital, and I was not familiar with recitals since my daughter was new to dance. I appreciated her letting me know. I´ve told that story many times. We would chat every week waiting for the girls. I knew she was a wonderful woman. My condolences.
