Mary C. Hoffman, 86, of Mount Airy, Md., and formerly of Shavertown, passed away Thursday, March 26, 2026, in Frederick Health Hospital.
Born in Wilkes-Barre, she was the daughter of the late Madeline and Joseph Herold.
She was a graduate of Hanover Township High School and earned her registered nursing degree from Wilkes-Barre General Hospital in 1960, where she worked first in pediatrics and then in the operating room. After taking the year off with the birth of her first son, Robert, she worked evening shifts at the hospital. After the birth of her second son, George, she took five years off. She then worked evening shifts for nine years at Maple Hill Nursing Home, followed by almost 20 years working for John Heinz and Allied Services. During that time, she earned her CRRN (Certified Rehabilitation Registered Nurse) certification.
After retiring, Mary volunteered at a free medical clinic in St. Therese's Church, visited parishioners in local hospitals, and helped feed homeless groups at the parish. She also volunteered at Meadows Nursing Home and sang in a group that visited nursing homes.
Mary enjoyed monthly dinner meetings with her nursing alumni friends from WBGH. She loved watching her favorite sports teams, the Dallas Cowboys, Washington Nationals, and especially her hockey team — The Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins.
Mary took pleasure in travelling, having visited Ireland, Germany, Hawaii, Florida, and the Caribbean. She also enjoyed cooking, crocheting, reading, and especially spending time with her grandchildren.
In addition to her parents, Mary was preceded in death by her beloved husband, George Jr., in 2001; brothers, Joseph, John, and William Herold; brother-in-law, Robert Walent; and sisters-in-law, Judith Walent and Mary Herold.
Surviving are her sons, Robert Hoffman and wife, Deborah, Frederick, Md.; and George Hoffman and wife, Zoë, Cranbury, N.J.; grandchildren, Hunter Hoffman, Emily Coleman, Gretchen Hoffman, and Ophelia Hoffman; sisters-in-law, Bernadine Herold, Irene Herold, and Kathryn Joseph; brother-in-law, Stanley Joseph; as well as nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Dear Members of Mary Herold Hoffman: Our sincere condolences to all of your family members. Mary truly had a full, productive and wonderful life. A loving mother and a very compassionate person. She was so true to her nursing profession and to her religion. We're also saddened of the death of her brother, William (Bill). We didn't see the obit of his death in our paper. Rest in Peace Mary and Bill. Memory Eternal! John and Irene Zimich.
