Patricia Hayes Obituary

Hayes, Patricia Anne
NORTH CHATHAM - Patricia Anne Hayes, 74, the beloved spouse of Joseph Lawrence Guy and mother of Devon Michael Guy, died in the Albany Medical Center ICU on October 1, 2023, consequent to severe head trauma from a fall she experienced on September 24.
She is survived by her sisters, Kathleen Hayes and her husband James Motta, and Mary Anne Hayes and her husband, Kent Peer. Patricia was the daughter of Thomas Hayes and his wife, the former Barbara O'Sullivan both originally from Glin, County Limerick, Ireland.
Born in Yonkers, N.Y. on January 13, 1949, the family moved to the Catskill in 1953. Patricia attended St. Patrick's grade and high school. She subsequently moved to Albany to care for her ailing mother. In Albany, she attended and received her bachelor's degree from Empire State College.
Patricia initially found employment providing supportive services to physically and mentally challenged individuals in a halfway house sponsored by the State Office for People with Developmental Disabilities. She subsequently worked for several years as a program reviewer for the State Office of Substance Abuse Services and Supports.
Patricia loved horses and she enjoyed riding her horse, Echo Lake Savory, for several years. She was an avid athlete, completing the 1985 New York City Marathon finishing in four hours and fifteen minutes.
Later in life, Patricia suffered from Multiple Sclerosis. This did not deter her from pursuing her loves and interests. She volunteered to assist disabled individuals through riding at the Albany Therapeutic Riding Center which provides recreational riding and support to disabled individuals. She also continued to ride herself with assistance on a beautiful black horse named Wowonken, aka "Mr. Wow."
Patricia will be greatly missed by her family and many friends. A memorial service will be held at the Daniel Keenan Funeral Home in Albany on October 11, at 7 p.m. Calling hours will take place prior to the service from 4 to 7 p.m. at the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers, contributions in memory of Patricia may be made to the Albany Therapeutic Riding Center, 6640 Fuller Station Road, Altamont, NY, 12009, or at www.albanytherapeuticridingcenter.com.

I was a neighbor and friend to Patricia and her family since about the mid eighties. I remember watching her with Devon as a toddler wobbling on the sidewalk of Greenway South. There were many outings together with our families on Lake George while camping, boating, or chilling out at our tiny cabin. She, like I, loved the lake, loved the water. Devon and my two sons attended the same school and I watched our kids grow from babies to young men. She struggled with her MS and I struggled with my Lyme Disease. She always had a listening ear; we could share our feelings, be they good or bad. Patricia was always the one to call me, to send a note, to remember my birthday. She was a classy lady (a former hippie too). I miss her. I miss her a bunch. I learned of Patricia's passing from my son Matthew on the day after Thanksgiving and was shocked, and oh so saddened. I was the one who called her when last we spoke, she living in NY, I living 11 years now in Florida. The last words she said to me before hanging up the phone were "call me more often". Lesson learned Patricia; I can't call you anymore, but I'll try to be a better friend to the few friends I have, none of which have the history, the memories, as old and deep and cherished as we had. Every once in a while she would pop a photo she'd found in the mail to me. Thoughtful. To Joe and Devon I say: she will always be on my mind and in my heart and you both will be there too.
