Elvira Hernandez of Joliet, age 90, passed away peacefully on January 12, 2025 while under the compassionate care of The Alden Courts of Shorewood. Elvira was born to her parents Victor Huerta and Lucia (nee Esquivel) Huerta in San Nicolas, Mexico on January 25, 1934.
Elvira lived her life dedicated to her family. While her husband Justino worked two jobs to provide for the family for much of their children’s formative years, all of the household duties and child-rearing needs were handled by Elvira. She could be firm when discipline was required, and she could be comforting when support was needed. She loved to cook for her family, and she excelled in the kitchen. She was dedicated to her faith and enjoyed attending services at any number of local churches in the Joliet area. In her free time, she enjoyed traveling to her hometown in Mexico to spend time with her extended family, she loved tending to her garden and flower beds around their home, and she was always willing to sit down and watch a most recent episode of her favorite telenovelas.
Elvira was preceded in death by her parents Victor and Lucia, as well as five of her siblings.
She is survived by her husband of sixty-nine years Justino Hernandez, her children; Juan Hernandez, Mike (Susan) Hernandez, Carlos (Debbie) Hernandez, Jose (Laura) Hernandez, Raul “Rick” Hernandez, and Tony (Michelle) Hernandez, her brother Vicente (the late Timotea) Nava, her grandchildren Keith, Kim (Greg) Fischer, Phillip (Rachel), Michael (Ana), Lisa, Jessica, and Felicia (Ramon) Navarro, and her great grandchildren Christopher, Elena, Laura, Ana, Isabelle, Matthew, Amina, and Daniel. Many other nieces, nephews, cousins, friends, and other loved ones also survive.
