Francis Willenburg Obituary

Rev. Msgr. Francis
J. Willenburg
UTICA
Reverend Monsignor Francis J. Willenburg, age 85, long-time pastor at St. Agnes Church in Utica, and most recently in residence at St. Anthony and St. Agnes Church, went home to his Lord and Savior on Thursday, July 10, 2014, at the St. Joseph Nursing Home. Monsignor Willenburg is survived by his sister, Anne Morris of St. Petersburg, Florida; and his nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, cousins, and godchildren. Monsignors heart was touched by many wonderful and close friendships too numerous to mention, and he felt like extended family to many of his dear parishioners and friends. He was predeceased by his parents, Frank and Emelia (Zerhusen) Willenburg; and sisters and brothers-in-law, Barbara and Harland Cooper, Mary C. Willenburg, and Robert Morris. Visitation will be held on Sunday (today) from 4-7 at St. Anthony and St. Agnes Church, 422 Tilden Ave., Utica. Vigil Services for Deceased Priest will be at the conclusion of visitation. For those wishing to do so, memorial contributions may be considered to St. Anthony and St. Agnes Church or to Catholic Charities Camp Nazareth Program; envelopes will be available at the church. Monsignor Willenburgs Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Monday at 10:30 at St. Anthony and St. Agnes Church officiated by Most Reverend Bishop Robert J. Cunningham. Concelebrating the Funeral Mass will be his nephew, Monsignor Robert Morris. He will be laid to rest alongside his family in St. Peters Cemetery in Rome, NY. Arrangements have been entrusted to the Eannace Funeral Home, Inc., 932 South St., corner of Hammond Ave. Online tributes at: www.EannaceFuneralHome.com

In a world seemingly short of authentic heroes, Monsignor Willenburg's legacy as a model of charity, humility, graciousness and kindness stands tall--all qualities of a true servant of Christ and a true hero for everyone who was fortunate enough to know him. We honor his legacy by following his example as the servant-hero to others that Christ wants each of us to be. He will never be forgotten.

We were so blessed he answered the calling to serve the Lord and to have known him. He was such a kind and caring person. My late father was especially fond of him. Our family was so touched that Father came to my Dad's wake in Utica in 1996 which was 13 years after my parents had retired to Florida. Heaven truly has another angel.

You will be missed. You were a great man, a caring coach, and a wonderful and spiritual priest. We will miss your slightly off key singing as mass opened and I can still hear you offering blessing to your Dear People of God.... rest with our Lord you have earned your place.

Monsignor Willenburg was born to be a pastor and he was a great one-a shepherd who cared for his people with humility and grace. He was a friend of my family and a priest the Catholic Church can be very proud of. He has now been welcomed home by God to join the other saints in heaven.

A saint in so many ways. We were blessed to know him. In his day he was also a terrific basketball player who, even as a priest, threw a mean elbow.

Msgr Willenburg was a great friend of the Luke family, he helped us when need and remained very dear to all of us. What I remember most about him was his power of recall. Every time I ran into him he would ask how my family was doing, stating each of my siblings with their first names, and he hadn't seen them in years.
