Ben Gitchel, IV

New Orleans, LA - Ben A. "Benny" Gitchel IV, age 52, died suddenly on December 4, 2025, at the LCMC University Medical Center in New Orleans.

Everyone who knew Benny was aware of how creative he was in multiple areas. He was a fantastic cook; his use of herbs was gifted. This led to establishing a hydroponic garden at the home he shared with 15-year partner John Calderara. In addition to a wide variety of herbs, they cultivated cucumbers and squash for the blossoms Benny liked to include in dishes.

Another outlet for Benny's artistic nature was the creation of faces painted on palm tree husks. He also wrote poetry and songs. He was self-employed as a Chinese Medicine therapist.

Benny had a wide circle of New Orleans friends, and volunteered at the Bishop Perry Community Center.

Born on July 16, 1973, in El Paso to parents M.L. Steltzer and Ben A. Gitchel III who later moved to the Upper Valley. Benny attended Open Fields School, and Hanover High School. He did a stint at the University of Miami, where he formed a band for which he sang and wrote songs.

Benny was predeceased by his mother M.L. Stelzer and his beloved rescue dog JC. He is survived by his father Ben A. Gitchel III of Wells River, VT and aunt Jacquline Baker of Southold, NY.

Benny's ashes will be interred next to his mother this spring at Piermont's South Lawn Cemetery. No date has yet been set.
