John Chapman Obituary

John Floyd Chapman

Croydon, NH - John Floyd Chapman, 91, of Croydon, New Hampshire, passed away peacefully on April 26th, 2024 at Valley Regional Hospital in Claremont, New Hampshire.

John was born on October 28th, 1932 to Granville Chapman and Florence (Beaton) Chapman in Canaan, New Hampshire. He grew up in Canaan Center and spent most of his early years in the Upper Valley. He had many cross-country adventures and spent time traveling in Canada, as well, where his mother was from.

His early career was spent in a variety of jobs, from selling clothes in a high-end menswear store in Hanover to working in factories throughout the Upper Valley to working bridge construction. Eventually, he settled on carpentry and construction, and built many homes and commercial buildings, including the Canaan Assembly of God church. In 1989 he retired for the first time, from Cardigan Mountain School after 13 years, where he worked on the buildings and grounds, the same year he moved to Danville, Vermont. He worked part time as a bookkeeper after that, before retiring for good in 1996.

When he wasn't building or remodeling something, John enjoyed hunting and fishing, especially with his brother, Sunny (Angus) and other friends and family. He also enjoyed watching sports, including baseball (it was a good day if the Yankees lost, and an even better day if the Red Sox won), football, NASCAR, and golf. He also had a green thumb and always had a garden. The only downside to that was every time the asparagus matured he got the itch to move again, evidenced by time spent living in Canaan, NH, Washington state, Danville, VT, Culpeper, VA, Peacham, VT, Lyndonville, VT, and Croydon, NH.

John was proceeded in death by his parents, Granville and Florence, his brothers, Sunny (Angus) and Chippy (Granville), his sister Corrina (Jessie), their spouses Helene, Arlene, and Tom, a niece, Sheila, and a nephew, Chucky (Angus), and his former spouses, Lorraine and Bette. He is survived by his daughters, Teri, Janice, Lynn, Lisa, and Cameron, grandchildren Candace, Mollie, Michael, Jozlynn, Haley, and Troy, his beloved great-grandchildren, many beloved nieces and nephews, and his former spouses Charlotte and Diana.

Family and friends are invited to John's calling hour Friday May 3rd 2024 from 5 to 6 PM at the Ricker Funeral Home, 433 US RT 4 Enfield, NH. John's funeral will be held at the funeral home on Saturday May 4th at 10 AM with burial to follow in Canaan Street Cemetery.

I'm not sure if I ever actually met John. I have known enough of his brothers, sisters, nieces and nephews etc. to recognize his face as soon as I saw it in the paper. To the entire Chapman clan, I offer my deepest condolences.
