Pat Kelly Obituary

age 79. Cherished husband of Cathy (nee Medved) for 50 years; dearest father of Trina, Alex (Sarah Friedmann), Catie, and Colleen (Ryan Carr); grandfather and babbas of Graham; brother to Bill and sister Dolly Viscardi, and the deceased Mike, Dennis, Ann, and Cathy. And bonus brother to Fran Lozar, Michelle Burwell, and Martha Grande; uncle to many special nieces and nephews.
Pat was born in Cleveland, OH on November 30, 1945. He graduated from Hiram College in 1967. Pat served during the Vietnam War (Phu Bai Combat Base) and, upon returning home, went to law school. He worked for local government and then was proud to be elected to serve as a judge for the Cuyahoga County Common Pleas Court.
Throughout his life, Pat was kind-hearted and made everyone feel important. He was generous with his time and words and offered unwavering support to his family and friends. He was often the first many would call for advice, comfort, or simply to share their days' ups and downs.
Pat was simultaneously serious and effortlessly funny, in one breath sharing his musings on current events and in the next cracking jokes. He enjoyed many things, from the quotidian - good coffee, sweet treats of all types - to the extra-special - traveling with family, teaching everyone to skip rocks - and everything in between. Pat meant so much to so many, a reflection of the care and love he gave so generously.
In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate contributions in memory of Pat to Meals on Wheels, where he enjoyed volunteering with Trina. Checks should be sent to "Meals on Wheels Cleveland Heights" at PO Box 18499, Cleveland Heights OH 44118-0499.
Funeral Mass Wednesday, October 29, 2025 at 11:00 a.m. at the Church of the Gesu. Interment Lake View Cemetery. I had the privilege of appearing before Judge Kelly as a litigation attorney. I got to know him better when he appeared as a guest presenter numerous times at the CWRU School of Law classes I taught as an Adjunct Professor. He did a superlative job.

In a case which he inherited as a judge that was pending for 14 years, he assigned me as the mediator. He told me, "Bill, no one else has been able to resolve this case but, if anyone can do it, you can." I couldn't! There was a reason why the case had been pending for 14 years!

Pat Kelly was a fine judge, a fine mediator and a fine man, a true gentleman. He will be sorely missed. With deepest, sympathy, Bill

Pat was a guy who listened, a man of good judgment, someone you could count on as a friend and co-worker. Those who came before him when he was on the bench as a Judge could count on getting a fair review. He served his country, his community and his family with honor, respect, and love. He will be missed by a lot of people.

Cathy I was devastated to hear the news about Pat. Too many memories to share but among the most cherished, being in law school together, helping him move into the apartment on Cliffview, driving you and him around on your wedding day in torrential rain, sharing a law office for a few years, convincing him to run for Judge as Pat Kelly, not R. Patrick Kelly (my proudest achievement). I know we were not close in recent years but our relationship always ran deep and was built on a true mutual respect. God Bless on 50 years of marriage! We are in Florida so we cannot make the funeral but our thoughts and prayers are with you and the entire family. God Bless. Mike Occhionero

Dear Kelly and kids,
We have had the utmost privilege of calling you, Pat, and the kids dear friends for 47 years. We have weathered much through that time and Pat always did it with kindness, grace, and impish humor. He will be so sorely missed. We pray that you find some comfort in knowing that he will be watching over all of you always. Rest well dear friend.
With Much Love,

Kelly family,
So very sorry for your loss. Judge Kelly was a kind gentleman. It was evident that he loved you all dearly. May he rest in peace.

Dear Cathy and kids - Dave and I are going to miss Pat so much... He was always one of the friendliest and most neighborly people on Fenwood. Pat always had a big smile and a good word for everyone - a role model for us. He won our love and respect right away, and it has never wavered in the past 30ish years.

We love the picture you chose for the obituary and the portrait you painted with your words. We can imagine Pat just about to say something funny or give someone encouragement.

We're sending all of you lots of love.
