Margaret Jones Obituary

Margaret Grace Ellen Jones passed away on May 18, 2025 in Winchester, VA surrounded by her family. She was born on October 1, 1932, to Sarah and Cornelius McGlynn in Philadelphia, PA. It was there that Margaret met Roycroft Clifton Jones, Jr. (Cliff)(Capt. USN, Ret.) and became his loving wife of 67 years. She was the devoted beloved mother of four children, Dr. Linda E. Jones (Stacie Hagenbaugh), Robert H. Jones (deceased), David C. Jones and Dr. Frederick G. Jones (Sandy). Her grandsons are Zachary R. Jones, Adam D. Jones, Mitchell P. Jones and Kyle M. Jones and she is the aunt of Sarah E. Bass (Howard) and Pamala Layton (Ronald). She is predeceased by her sisters Grace M. Herold and Dr. Mary B. McGlynn.
Margaret was a joy and a ray of light for everyone who met her. She worked as a legal secretary, a manuscript reader and jacket designer for a publishing company, and at 23 was the youngest member of the Philadelphia Club of Advertising Women. She later took classes on coding and worked as a data technician at Atlantic Research Corporation and at the National Academy of Sciences (NAS) Space Science Board, Biological Sciences, and as the Administrative Assistant to the President of NAS. Margaret was a member of the Penn Arts Workshop, National Genealogical Society, The New England Historic and Genealogical Society, Bondurant Family Association, and the Doherty (O'Dochartaigh) Family Association.
Her work as a volunteer docent at the Chrysler Museum in Norfolk, VA introduced her to the joy of art in its many forms. In 1980, she worked with Annie Snyder to "Save the Manassas Battlefield" from being commercially developed, having personally gathered over 2000 signatures from the community.
As a Navy wife married to a fighter pilot, she moved with her children 21 times – many times across the country with four babies. Peggy would tell you that she had a good life full of joy and happiness. She and Cliff travelled extensively throughout their marriage, including much time in her beloved Ireland. She was an avid genealogical researcher, and consummate reader and puzzler.
Margaret will be laid to rest at Arlington National cemetery at a later date.
